I started in the medical field at a young age as an Emergency Medical Technician. I eventually transitioned from the ambulance to working full time in the emergency room learning about illness and how to stabilize and prepare patients for their next level of care - managing wounds, surgery, oncology, psychiatry or hospice care.
These experiences provided me with deep insight into patient care, general health care practices, and related symptoms as well as the dynamics of taking care of sick and healing patients through their stages of healing.
This experience exposed me to the field of pain management where I was drawn to a very wise nurse practitioner who specialized in integrative pain management. She believed there was a time for medication and a time when natural remedies and body work could assist the body to heal without overly relying on opioids. I went on to spend 5 years working under her, learning about care plans and how to critically assess patient needs in a variety of settings, including skilled nursing facilities/rehab centers treating pre and postoperative patients recovering from procedures, reducing anxiety and depression in patients coping with dementia and Alzheimer's and those suffering with general aches and pain. Over time, this gave me the confidence to actively collaborate with doctors as well as the entire care team responsible for the management of patient symptoms.
In part, this has been a very personal journey for me as my own mother had been injured at an early age and, in tandem with working in the hospital from a clinical perspective, I grew up understanding what it was like to have a loved one living with chronic pain. I truly understand the physical and emotional toll that pain can have on family and friends.
