MLD Vodder Method

What is the Lymphatic System?

The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials. It helps regulate fluids in our bodies.

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a very gentle form of massage and can help to reawaken the body’s immune system by encouraging the flow and release of lymphatic fluid.  This can help reduce water retention, otherwise known as edema. Manual lymphatic drainage can also be a good complementary therapy to assist the body’s natural detoxification process and clear the body of any toxins.

It is ideal for those needing gentle handling, whether pregnant, postnatal, Post Liposuction,  surgical procedure, chronic allergies or Autoimmune disease symptom managing. Depending on the condition, treatment can be localized or generalized to the whole body.  Areas that can be treated include the legs, face, back or the whole body.

Manual Lymph Drainage, better known as MLD, was developed by the renowned Dr. Vodder a century ago. Refined and researched, the technique was discovered to hold benefits for health and beauty and has been the modality of choice in European Clinics of Lymphology, elite spas, and hospitals.

What is the goal of Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

The goal of MLD is to increase lymph flow, whereas massage is focused on muscles. While both have therapeutic benefits that are equal in importance, they are different in performance. The client or patient can expect the pain-free, relaxing benefits that Vodder-style MLD has to offer.

Example: I give you a brand new car. The parts are perfect and glistening. How perfect would that car run if I told you not to change the oil? It’s not enough to have great parts. Lymph fluid’s role can be compared to the oil and is as important to our body as oil is to the car. It must go through a filtration process. Naturally, the process is done with muscle movement, breathing, a healthy diet, and adequate hydration. But, how many get enough to keep lymph flowing and filtering at a healthy pace? With MLD, cellular debris (a component of lymph) is eradicated as lymphangiomotoricity is activated by the gentle strokes of MLD and filtration is achieved at an accelerated pace. Anyone can have manual lymphatic drainage; these are some of the symptoms and conditions MLD has proven to help in researched case studies.

Benefits of MLD Post Surgical Procedure / Liposuction Procedure

Frequently recommended by plastic surgeons during the recovery phase following cosmetic liposuction. This specialized form of massage is generally believed to decrease recovery time and improve results, by reducing post-surgical swelling and fibrosis (scar tissue formation). Client heal time after liposuction sees full results by month 5 or 6. With MLD treatments before and after the procedure, you can see results in as soon as 2 to 3 months and decrease the pain and discomfort in early recovery stages.

MLD can be an effective treatment and offer many benefits for those both preparing for or recovering from surgery.

MLD for Pregnant Women

Women that are suffering from tired feet or water retention during pregnancy can get some relief with MLD.  This gentle massage technique helps to encourage the flow and release of excess fluid held within the tissues just below the skin.  This is why many women find it very beneficial, especially during the later stages of pregnancy, to help prevent or treat edema.

Fluid retention can cause uncomfortable temporary conditions such as carpal tunnel and swollen ankles during pregnancy.  Many women find that as they progress through the third trimester and reach the last few weeks, swollen feet and ankles can become very uncomfortable.  By gently moving the lymphatic fluid using light massage strokes, manual lymphatic drainage can be very beneficial, as well as promoting relaxation and calm.

When should you get it? This technique is very gentle and safe, at any time. Even a day after surgery (incision area would be avoided).  How often? You will see a difference in one treatment. Depending on your goals, and conditions, you could receive this work once a month or a couple of times a week. It can even help mothers breast milk.

MLD for Chronic Autoimmune Disease / Lipodema /  Cancer

Simply put, autoimmune is your body attacking itself causing nerve pain, inflammation, chronic fatigue and other confusing symptoms that affect the quality of everyday life. The doctors' approach is to manage symptoms and pain. Common treatments often prescribed pain meds, immunosuppressants, and anti-inflammatories which can pollute the body, stagnate the lymph system, increase the rate of infection and take a toll on the organs and body long term. Autoimmune diseases always come with inflammation which can be left behind as swelling, edema and even harden into fibrosis. MLD can rid the body of excess swelling, prevent fibrosis and relieve the toxins causing the body to attack itself and jump-start the healing process.
